01 - 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
02 - 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
03 - ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
04 - 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
05 - 1 teaspoon salt
06 - ½ teaspoon white or black pepper
07 - 4 cups frozen peas
08 - ¼ cup heavy cream (optional)

02 - Stir the flour and garlic powder (if you’re using it) into the melted butter until it forms a smooth paste.
03 - Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously. Cook this mixture over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until thickened. This should take roughly 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
04 - Add the frozen peas to the thickened mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until they're warmed through, about 4 minutes.
05 - Mix in the heavy cream (if desired) and adjust the seasoning as needed. Garnish with pepper, a pat of butter, or fresh herbs like dill or chives. Serve and enjoy!

04 - If using canned peas, add them in at the end to prevent mushiness.
